Perhaps if you start mixing the two styles together, you get an idea of the Belgium sound - but it’s not all that simple.
There was alot of potential in the world at the time but there were also some people in Belgium that were imagining something before it existed. They knew by heart what was the sound that identified them. They were defying the conventional style with a strive to create. Their talent and determination set the ground and led people to a totally new era of their own.
Our little talk with Olivier Abbeloos ( T99 - Quadrophonia ) has been very pleasant and he has some things to reveal.
1. What plays in your car ?
Mostly old hiphop because my son is into breakdance/skateboarding and he hijacked my car radio.
2. You have produced tunes that are now the anthems of the rave scene, can you recall what was on your mind at that time?
I was bored and wanted to do something else . I used to work at that time at a record store named target records,
My brother in law is Olivier Pieters and he was the dj of the famous Belgium underground club ‘bocaccio’ at that period ,
but i was a bit bored of the sound in 1989 because acid house was just over and clubs were looking for something new at that time.
I was producing also a lot of hiphop at that period . So i started to experiment with breaks and acid house and my influences of the club bocaccio.
I gave the tracks to Olivier and he played them 7 times a night.
3. What is one subgenre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?
Breaks mixed with house.
4. What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
Probably T99 - Anasthasia .Early works of Lil Louis, 808 state, the detroit scene, Joey beltram ‘Energy Flash’
Hard to answer this question because i also have a big new-wave & disco/funk collection.
5. As both a Dj/Producer , which side are you on : entertainment or educational ?
Educational probably , because i don’t like to do the same mixes over and over again. i always look out for new stuff.
6. Do you walk around humming melodies?
Sometimes depends on the mood I am in .
7. What’s your message to Report2dancefloor Radio ?
(including your plans ahead)
Thanks for inviting me , i enjoyed it.
My plans : keep on releasing and hopefully i find the right company to work with one day.
Look out for the upcoming remixes of T99 : Anasthasia . The freestylers remix sounds good.
