GEZ VARLEY (LFO) INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH

5/22/2016

Low Frequency Oscillation (LFO) is the term for an electronic signal which is usually below 20 Hz firstly used on modulars and synthesizers that creates a rhythmic pulse or sweep. This pulse or sweep is often used to modulate synthesizers, delay lines and other audio equipment in order to create effects used in the production of electronic music.
It limits the amount of output of a bass, synth, etc at a desired speed which produces a wavylike sound, slowly vibrating, generally subsonic waves (0 – 20 Hz or so). Often used to modulate or change a parameter in a synth, sampler, or effects processor. A common application is modulating the pitch of an audio oscillator with an LFO for sound alteration.

But to most of us, LFO brings in mind the electronic British band in the 1990’s. Two guys , Mark Bell & Gez Varley were among the UK's true club music innovators.
The blips and bleeps are unmistakably the sound of a music scene breaking free in the North West and that is Leeds to be precise.
At their first release on Warp Records on 1990 it’s impossible to overstate how much ‘LFO’, the track, rocked the world. Perfectly sequenced, perfectly pitched.
To this unchanged level of such quality, many more tracks and albums followed for over a decade.

Devastating as it was Mark Bell passed away in 2014. Today, Gez Varley as the remaining member of this legendary band carries out all that experience , all that knowledge and produces dance music under the name
G-Man. If you happen to come across him in the social media you will see that he still makes sure to keep the spirit of LFO alive and still is good friends with the oldschool gang.
Equally friendly is to his fans and always willing to accept requests that help the dance scene.
Such a request was his guest set for Report2Dancefloor Radio a while ago, and now this interview. Enjoy.
