INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH // OLIVIER ABBELOOS

2/26/2016

Back in the day, as back as late '70's, 'Popcorn'-style novelties were the norm in Belgian clubs until all that developed to American and European disco. The disco era lasted until almost by the 80’s, then the club scene became hungry for a change. These were the times that have brought - in comparison to today -  revolutionary changes on the music scene. Especially for Belgium, imports from U.S. were exploding with sounds according to the trends, acid- firstly- was introduced, and on that side of the Atlantic, Chicago and Detroit were highlighted for creating something new. Meantime Belgium was creating it’s unique sound that was dark, aggressive and fierce, it’s the post-Punk style known as EBM (Electronic Body Music).
Perhaps if you start mixing the two styles together, you get an idea of the Belgium sound - but it’s not all that simple.
There was alot of potential in the world at the time but there were also some people in Belgium that were imagining something before it existed. They knew by heart what was the sound that identified them. They were defying the conventional style with a strive to create. Their talent and determination set the ground and led people to a totally new era of their own.
Our little talk with Olivier Abbeloos ( T99 - Quadrophonia ) has been very pleasant and he has some things to reveal
.
Picture

 1. What plays in your car ?
Mostly old hiphop because my son is into breakdance/skateboarding and he hijacked my car radio.

2. You have produced tunes that are now the anthems of the rave scene, can you recall what was on your mind at that time?
I was bored and wanted to do something else . I used to work at that time at a record store named target records,
My brother in law is Olivier Pieters and he was the dj of the famous Belgium underground club ‘bocaccio’ at that period ,
but i was a bit bored of the sound in 1989 because acid house was just over and clubs were looking for something new at that time.
I was producing also a lot of hiphop at that period . So i started to experiment with breaks and acid house and my influences of the club bocaccio.
I gave the tracks to Olivier and he played them 7 times a night.

3. What is one subgenre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?
Breaks mixed with house.

4. What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
Probably T99 - Anasthasia .Early works of Lil Louis, 808 state, the detroit scene, Joey beltram ‘Energy Flash’
Hard to answer this question because i also have a big new-wave & disco/funk collection.

 5. As both a Dj/Producer , which side are you on : entertainment or  educational ?
Educational probably , because i don’t like to do the same mixes over and over again. i always look out for new stuff.

6. Do you walk around humming melodies?

Sometimes depends on the mood I am in .

7. What’s your message to Report2dancefloor Radio ?

 (including your plans ahead)
Thanks for inviting me , i enjoyed it.

My plans : keep on releasing and hopefully i fi
nd the right company to work with one day.
Look out for the upcoming remixes of T99 : Anasthasia . The freestylers remix sounds good.

A Trip To The Moon || Rebecca Goldberg

We have known Rebecca Goldberg from her dj sets as she has been a Featured Artist several times. Her sets  are very genuine and true to the environment she lives in, she comes from Detroit. Moving dancefloor tracks,  very much along techno, house, electro. Throughout all this time, we have also known Rebecca to be very diverse and always searching both past and present in order to carve her own path musically.
The right time for her has come, on January 6, 2016 she  released her first EP., A Trip To The Moon. Based on a 1902 silent film with a soundtrack  of a classical philarmonic composition : violins and trumpets. The story of the film sees a group of astronomers who make a study for a cannon-propelled capsule to make a travel to the Moon, explore the Moon's surface, conflict with the Moon’s inhabitants named Selenites, escape and return to Earth with a captive Selenite.
Today, 114 years later, Rebecca Goldberg seems to be giving what the film would hope for. The concept throughout has a stunning balance, thus a fusion of retro and futuristic.
And to justify all that she has released her EP on USB stick. printed and placed in a hard-box case.

A trip To The Moon by Rebecca Goldberg

1. Proposition
The first track comes as an intro and you do get the feeling that a science project is about to burst before your eyes. Very subtle synths with a sub bass to be kicking at the right tempo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Build Scene
A track that is laying the path to what is coming. Starts of with mechanical sounds: you hear those cogs working and your mind is taken into a lab. Towards the end it gives you a hint of what follows.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. A Trip To The Moon
The third track has very much evident her love for the dark wave, space cold minimal syth sounds and retro drum machines. Subtle yet very dynamic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4
. Champignon Parapluie
At this point we are given a track that works as an interval to the final. The title from French translates as ‘Mushroom Umbrella’ .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Labor Omnia Vincit

The fifth track  starts of as a picturesque journey of minimal mechanical sounds keeping a consistent level and develops to a deep avant-garde techno acidy track. We succeeded a trip to the moon, let’s dance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What comes as a bonus is the short film of
Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) with Rebecca’s soundtrack on , skilfully remixed.

Belgians at large—have been dancing to repetitive mechanized rhythms, playing records extra slow and partying for days on end decades before the concept of rave even existed.

Belgium’s complex weave of war and geography has provided the ideal conditions for musical open-mindedness. It’s this historical flexibility that has fostered electronic body music, Belgian new beat, and rave techno—not to mention arguably the most vital avant-garde fashion in the world.

According to most music sites the top 10
tracks that helped define the sound of "rave" are :

1. Quadrophonia - Quadrophonia

2. T99 - Anasthasia
3.
Pleasure Game - Le Dormeur
4. D.J P.C* - Inssomniak
5. Modular Expansion - Unit 1
6. A Split Second - Flesh

7. Dilemma - Erase Your Mind
8. Channel X - Rave The Rhythm
9.
Pleasure Game - Le Seigneur Des Ténèbres
10.
Praga Khan Feat. Jade 4U* - Injected With
                                                              A Poison

From the list above the interest is to be placed on two acts :
Quadrophonia and T 99 , as they both have one thing in common, Olivier Abbeloos.
Going as back as the late 80's this is a name - that to many - means alot.

Quadrophonia were a Dutch/Belgian Techno act, formed by Olivier Abbeloos and Lucien Foort in the late 1980s, with several of their tracks performed by Marvin D (Marvin Tholen).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
T99
was initially Patrick de Meyer, who released three solo works under this pseudonym. However, he heard Olivier Abbeloos working on the track "Anasthasia", and suggested that Abbeloos release it as T99.

From then on T99 was a duo, made up of de Meyer and Abbeloos.

Olivier Abbeloos is considered to the most fellow producers the master of oldskool, the legend and a great personality. This somehow justified by his low-profile attitude and modest approach. So here is a good deal: Report2Dancefloor Radio has in hand an exclusive set to be streamed on a special event on February 13th.

Olivier Abbeloos (T-99-Quadrophonia)//Report2Dancefloor Radio

A different event to those prior as the airtime is exclusively on guest's hands. For the first time, the line-up is set by the most close R2D guest Djs and for new names to look out for. Once again we promise you a wide range of styles and tunes, that come from musicheads in different parts of the world.

Music has no boundaries.
